چکیده
We present the Onsager–Stefan–Maxwell thermodiffusion equations, which account for Soret and Dufour effects in multicomponent fluids. Unlike transport laws derived from kinetic theory, this framework preserves structure of isothermal Stefan–Maxwell separating thermodynamic forces that drive diffusion force drives heat flow. The transport-coefficient matrix is symmetric, second law thermodynamics imbues it with simple spectral characteristics. Stochastic Models of Thermodiffusion
New stochastic models of thermodiffusion are constructed and their hydrodynamical limits are studied through a first order Chapman-Enskog expansion. These models differ from earlier ones by taking into account all first order contributions proportional to the temperature gradient and, thus, allow for both positive and negative Soret coefficients, in accordance with observations.
متن کاملA Stochastic Approach to Thermodiffusion
In presence of thermal inhomogeneities, particle diffusion is known to occur even without concentration gradients. This phenomenon, known as “thermodiffusion” or “Ludwig-Soret effect” is well documented since the nineteenth century, and has numerous current applications which range from astrophysics to polymer physics and chemistry. In this contribution, we propose new microscopic stochastic mo...
متن کاملThermodiffusion in the Critical Region
Long range fluctuations of the order parameter affect thermodynamic as well as transport properties in the critical region. The values of transport coefficients near a critical point are typically enhanced compared to the values in the classical region far away from a critical point. Asymptotically close to a critical point, the critical enhancements obey power laws with universal critical expo...
متن کاملThermodiffusion of charged colloids: single-particle diffusion.
An expression for the single-particle thermal diffusion coefficient of a charged colloidal sphere is derived on the basis of force balance on the Brownian time scale in combination with thermodynamics. It is shown that the single-particle thermal diffusion coefficient is related to the temperature dependence of the reversible work necessary to build the colloidal particle, including the core, t...
متن کاملThermodiffusion of interacting colloids. II. A microscopic approach.
A microscopic approach is presented to describe the contribution to the thermal diffusion coefficient of colloids due to intercolloidal particle interactions. An exact expression for the leading-order virial coefficient of the thermal diffusion coefficient of interacting colloidal spheres is derived in terms of the intercolloidal pair-interaction potential and hydrodynamic interaction functions...
